‘20,000-25,000 people to participate in rally’ – GGMA President

‘20,000-25,000 people to participate in rally’ – GGMA President“We are organising a huge rally in Ahmedabad of garment producers on March 4 to protest against the imposition of 10 percent excise duty on branded garments”, thundered, Mr Vijay Purohit, President - Gujarat Garment Manufacturers Association (GGMA).

Fibre2fashion was the first to break the news of the rally today morning. Mr Purohit confirmed this news to our newsteam, when we spoke to him for his reaction on the budget proposal to impose 10 percent excise duty on branded garments.

He added by saying, “Around 20,000-25,000 people are expected to take part in the rally and we will submit a memorandum to the excise collector to withdraw the levy, as it is not possible for the garment industry to function under such duress”.

Cotton prices have shot up by more than 100 percent, from a year ago. This in turn will make fabric and clothing prices to surge 80 and 50 percent, respectively. Now to add fuel to the fire, the government has imposed excise duty”, he informed.
